The Buzz of Success: Highlights from Our December Grading Day

Updated: 5 days ago

By Sharon – Sunday 7th December 2025

I'm writing this the day after our recent grading, still buzzing with excitement!

Having missed the previous two gradings, I truly missed the electric atmosphere—the pride in sharing everyone’s hard work and celebrating the achievements of our fantastic graders.

One positive sign of a good grading? I slept soundly last night, despite waking up to discover a few bruises I hadn't even registered during the action!

This grading took place at Hounsdown School. While it’s a superb facility, I know it was a little further afield for many of you. A huge thank you to everyone who made the extra effort to drive and transport your family members.

The Colour Belt grading is a long morning, both for the students waiting their turn and for the dedicated family and friends watching and cheering them on.

A Special Shout-Out to Kelly!

A massive congratulations to Kelly, who achieved a club first: a white belt receiving the award for the most Outstanding Grader of the Day! This decision is made by Master McNally. Kelly’s name will be added to the Club Shield, which we proudly display on grading days. Let this inspire us all to train hard and get your name up there, too!

Thank You, Volunteers

Our sincere gratitude goes to Mr Beard and Mrs Olive for their time (and for braving the cold!) managing the theory aspect of the grading. Also, a big thank you to Mark, Imogen, and Evie for providing essential additional help throughout the day.

Louise, our 2nd Dan, was phenomenal. She did an amazing job instructing and demonstrating during the colour belt grading, and then embarked on the gruelling two-hour Black Belt grading. Well done, Louise! We send our heartfelt congratulations on what I'm sure is your successful promotion to 3rd Dan.

Challenge Yourself

I want to share a personal reflection here, too. I don’t mind admitting that, at 56, the idea of pursuing my 2nd Dan felt a bit crazy. But the truth is this: if I can, and you feel you have the ability, you absolutely must challenge yourself and go for it. The experience is genuinely uplifting.

Grading alongside my much-younger counterparts was incredibly encouraging. The support shown by everyone has been truly amazing.

Our Inspirational Leader

Finally, a mention for Mr Monkcom. His dedication to Taekwondo is admirable, and his personal drive for excellence extends to every student he teaches. He always pushes us ‘to be the best we can be’. I saw that quote written on the stage at Hounsdown School, and I thought it perfectly encapsulates our leader. Grading day is a significant undertaking that requires hours of preparation and organisation.

So, from me and all your dedicated students: THANK YOU.

We would really appreciate your feedback, whether it's positive or constructive. We can only make improvements by hearing the views of our members and their families. Please feel free to comment below!
